Information regarding driver's education and the DMV license process.

We would like to share some information with you regarding driver’s education and the DMV license process.

          Some Facts:
  • At the age of 15 ½ a student may apply for a provisional permit with the DMV
  • The process begins with enrolling in Driver’s Education
  • Only DMV certified individuals can offer Driver’s Education
  • Once enrolled in Driver’s Education, enrollment paperwork can be taken to the DMV with a birth certificate and a social security card to apply for the provisional permit
  • The provisional permit application form is called the “DL 44”
  • The application fee is $28
  • You will also have to pass an eye exam and a traffic laws and sign test (sample tests found here http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/interactive/tdrive/exam.htm)
  • A passing score is at least 39 correct answers out of 46 questions
  • You must come prior to 4:30 pm for any exams
  • Once an application (DL 44) is accepted and exam passed the DMV will  issue the provisional permit which is activated after the 1st hour of Driver’s Education
  • After Driver’s Education is passed, and a certificate of completion (DL 387) is received, a student may start driver’s training
  • Driver’s training is done through both a professional private party and guardian.
  • Driver’s training with a professional private party is a total of 6 hours and to be contracted by student
  • Driver’s training with a guardian (25 years old or older) must total 50 hours, with 10 of those hours being night time hours.
  • Once the professional private party driver’s training is completed and a permit is held for 6 months, a student can take the driving test once the age of 16 is reached
  • You may make a DMV driving test appointment by calling 1-800-777-0133
  • If a student waits until 17 ½ years of age, they may get their permit without driver education or driver training, but you will have to wait until age 18 to take the driver’s test
